Be Patient, We’ll Clean Ogoni Environment, Buhari Tells Ogoni Kings

President Muhammadu Buhari has promised Ogoni people that their land will be cleaned but only they should be patient.

He said this on Friday when Kings and opinion leaders of Ogoni land from the Supreme Council of Ogoni Traditional Rulers, some elected leaders of Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People, the academia, community and religious leaders paid him a visit at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Quoting Mr. President by the Special Adviser to the President on Media on Publicity, Femi Adesina, Buhari said, “Certainly I am aware of the challenges in Ogoni-land. But I want to appeal to you as institutionalised leaders to speak more to the youths.

With patience, we will prevail together in restoring the environment, especially with the involvement of the international community.

“We are working hard to change the situation. I know that if we had power in the country, many Nigerians will create and face their businesses.”

But before the meeting, the FG had through Minister of Environment, Ibrahim Jibril (who was represented by Dr Ishayaku Mohammed, Senior Technical Assistant to the minister) at a Pre-contract Award meeting organised by the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, said that it had concluded all processes outlined in the agreement, while funds for the project had been provided.

He said: “The stage we are in now is the procurement process. We have 183 companies that are pre-qualified and have been asked to submit their documents to bid for contract.

“All bids are supposed to end on September 24 followed by financial evaluation. There is a timeline for each process.

“We have matching orders that by the end of October, people should be seen on the field.”
